The city is a rose garden

Published 15.11.07

Manchester’s design agencies have been doing the city proud this autumn, with a plethora of nominations in the Roses Design Awards

Manchester companies feature heavily in the nominations for this year’s Roses Design Awards. By the time you’re reading this the awards ceremony will be done and dusted; but the shear number of Manchester nominations is well worth noting and it’s a great indictor of the rude health the city’s design scene is enjoying.

Mark Lester, Creative Director at Mark Studios, has been nominated in the Designer of the Year category. It’s been great twelve months for the agency, with their work for the Manchester City Council events teams making big statements across the city and beyond. In the Emerging Designer of the Year category, an impressive three of seven nominations are from Manchester – Andrew Diey (Radium Audio), Matt Maurer (True North) and Claire Brooker (MMU). Radium Audio are also up in the Film / TV Title and Animation category. The company have already bagged a Big Chip and Best Of Manchester award in 2007; let’s hope their winning streak continues.

True North are up again, this time in the corporate identity category for their work with the British Empire & Commonwealth Museum. The same contract sees them nominated in the Exhibition Design category. Their work for Paul Moffat is in the running in the Stationery category.

Love Creative received two nominations in the Corporate Literature / Annual Report category and another two in the Promotional Literature category. It doesn’t end there for Love though – they’re up again in the Best Item of Self Promotion category for their Chavs & Scallies Christmas card and in the Best Use of Illustration category for their work with Umbro. Like A River Brand Agency, who won a gold in the Roses Best Design Agency category in 2006, also feature in the Best Use of Illustration category.

The Chase have two nominations; featuring in the Best Direct Mail and Best Poster categories for their work with The Drum and Marks & Spencer respectively. Glorious are also nominated twice – for Best Use of Photography and Best Website. They’re joined by Bubble in the latter category, and by Love Creative.

Claire Brooker’s Ellipse Frieze earns her a second nomination, this time in the Product Design category. Claire is one of three designers in this category whose work was part of the Design Initiative stand at 100% Design. Ian McIntyre features with his Slush Cast Vase and Burnt Toast received their nomination for The Horse table. Burnt Toast have been doing rather well of late, picking up Sustain magazine’s ‘Most Sustainable Product’ award at 100% Design 2007.

The awards ceremony took place in Manchester on the 18th of October and a full list of winners (hopefully resplendent with our city’s creative talent) is available at The Roses website.
