Fudge

**Creatively**

Paul Arden was executive creative director of Saatchi and Saatchi when they were recreating British advertising. Today
he is a best selling author producing books that take about ten minutes to read, but contain a lifetime of wisdom. His first book
is entitled "It's not how good you are, it's how good you want
to be". This expresses perfectly our approach to our creative product. However good it is today we want it to be as good as
it can possibly be and then some.

**Technically**

Bill Shankly once said "It's not a question of life and death, it's far more important than that". This attitude completely sums up our dedication to our digital work. Our creatives frequently come up with ideas for sites and some techies would say 'It can't be done'.
We say 'How could it be done?' and then spend all of our waking hours making it happen.

**Emotionally**

What seperates agencies? The answer, in a word, is emotion. Some call it passion, others call it commitment. But whatever you call it, it means caring as much about your client's business as they do. At Fudge we are emotionally involved with each and every client. If things don't go perfectly, we take it personally.
So we make sure they do.

NOISE Festival

NOISE, the UK’s first ‘virtual’ talent festival for artists aged 25 and under, returns in October 2008.

Launched in the UK in 2006 and funded by the Arts Council, the NOISE Festival showcases young talent across a range of disciplines, including visual art, graphic design, photography, fashion and music.

The best work is then judged and short-listed by a panel of industry heavyweights, with the aim of giving the next generation the exposure and boost they need to break into the creative industries.

This year’s ‘NOISE Curators’ include Mercury Prize-winning artist Badly Drawn Boy for Music, acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid for Architecture, eco-chic designer Noki for Fashion, Habitat’s Tom Dixon for Product Design, former head of exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Art Norman Rosenthal for Fine Art, and Attik Design’s James Sommerville for Graphics, New Media and Advertising.

The very best work on offer will be showcased at www.noisefestival.com throughout October.

And in year two of the Festival, the NOISE website will work as a professional network – think two parts Facebook social networking and one part Linkdin professional profiling, with a dash of MySpace’s musician-friendly approach thrown in for good measure – where artists can get in touch, viewing people’s profiles and portfolios. So, by joining the NOISE network, a graphic designer can link up with a band to produce cover art for a demo, while a fashion designer can attract a hungry young photographer to create eye-catching pictures for a portfolio.

The NOISE Dream Jobs project is another way talented young people can break into the creative industries, offering the best of NOISE hands-on experience and the chance to work with a company at the top of its game. Previous dream jobs have included placements at MTV Brazil, Wayne Hemingway’s Hemingway Design and MacKinnon & Saunders, model makers for Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. Placements for NOISE Festival 2008 include Zaha Hadid Architects, James Sommerville’s Attik Design and ‘mentorships’ at the BBC.

Check out the website for the very best of NOISE 2008. And while you’re at it, why not register yourself for a chance to show off your work and link up with like-minded people? Just go to the NOISE website, create a profile and upload your work. It’s that simple.

So what are you waiting for? Go to www.noisefestival.com – and make some NOISE!

FKDA architecture|design

FKDA is an architectural / design practice based in Manchester (RIBA Chartered). The practice is design led and aims to achieve beautifully detailed projects of the highest standards by employing simplicity and sensitivity. We place a strong emphasis on the creative use of building materials, the qualities of light and the relationship between building and context, considering these issues to be of primary importance, as opposed to adopting a prescribed style and response. Ultimately our aim is for each project to reflect an informed and original interpretation of the client, site, brief and budget.

Our practice does not specialise in particular building types. We strive on the diversity of the projects we have undertaken and continue to be involved with; from school projects, community buildings, housing, private residential houses to small scale office developments.

For each project, irrespective of its size, we develop strong working relationships with the client, other consultants and the building contractor.

We're architects that are passionate about design. We also enjoy our work, and believe it shows in the results...

Acting for Fun

Richard Sinnott is a professional actor of twenty three years experience. He regularly appears on television in programmes such as Life On Mars, Coronation Street and Emmerdale and has also appeared in the film The Parole Officer with Steve Coogan.

N.B. CLASSES RUN TWICE YEARLY, EVERY SPRING & AUTUMN. AND BEING IMPROVISATION MEANS YOU CAN JOIN ONE AT ANY TIME OR ELSE BOOK NICE AND EARLY FOR THE NEXT. CALL ME!

Class venue: church hall off School Lane, Didsbury Village, South Manchester.

Cost: £12.00 per week, payable fortnightly in cash ( no cheques ) and there's a discount rate of £140.00 if all fourteen weeks are paid in advance. This then becomes a sliding discount as the weeks go by.

Clothes and footwear: casual! The sort of stuff in which you can sit down on the floor.

Course aims: learn to improvise, build confidence, develop group skills, have fun!

1) We start off with a warm-up of fun theatre games and then you're split into groups and given themes - comic or serious - upon which to improvise, rehearse and then perform various sketches throughout the evening.

2) Halfway through we have a 15 minute break and I'll provide tea, coffee, milk, sugar, Robinson's cordial and cups. These are free and you can have as many as you wish throughout the evening.

3) Also woven into the course are glimpses at what it is like to present a typical commercial and tips on approaching an audition or interview.

4) Those aims again? To help you enjoy building confidence and developing group skills. No-one will ever be made to do something they don't want to do and no-one will ever be left sitting around growing bored. Which is why I call it 'Acting for Fun'.

5) Then a nice tradition is for the group to stroll to the pub for a drink. It's only 50 metres from the church and it's a great way to end the evening and get to know the group socially.

6) Those who have done the Beginners course are then eligible to return for my Intermediate Course, although no-one is obliged to do so. This then leads to my Advanced Course.

7) P.S: The hall is heated but if the weather turns parky then please wear warmer ( casual ) clothes.

PLEASE NOTE:

YOU MUST BOOK, as each week is designed around the numbers I am expecting to arrive. My number is: 0161 - 438 - 0363.

Freelance photographer, working with magazines, design and advertising companies. As well as collaborating with above, also interested in exhibition /public spaces: and the curating and sequencing work within gallery and non-gallery sites.

Recent commissions have been for Creative Concern (Manchester City Council)/ Bolton at Home/ London Sinfonia/ Quarantine /Jasmin Vardimon Dance company / Mid-Pennine Arts/ Corporation Pop.

Approach to all commissioned work is strongly in the spirit of collaboration and dialogue (between the designer/client and the subject). I see all commissioned work as being underpinned by self initiated project work. The reoccurring general themes around this work explore: The photograph’s relationship with the real; the relationship between the consumerism and identity- actually it is hard to summarise without it all sounding a bit grand- best to look at the work…….

Selected exhibition:
2008: ‘Spaces of Enclosure” London Gallery West. 2007 : ‘How We Are Now’ Selected work group exhibition.Tate Britain. ‘Reconstruction’ (publication) Impressions Gallery Bradford; ‘Sick Buildings’ Artefact at FACT Liverpool.‘ Not just another Story’ (publication)/ ‘Hotel Europa’ KulturBraurei Berlin / ‘Work’ Fotogallerie in der Brotfabrik.

Effective design enhances business performance. Marketing processes in particular benefit from the confidence generated by an attractive logo, marketing collateral, exhibition stands, websites and so on.

‘The Reform Experience’ is based on taking a long, hard look at every aspect of a company’s operations that could benefit from fresh design ideas. In short, it means ‘re-forming’ or re-shaping an entire business approach. That includes the corporate image a company’s products, services and the way everything functions together. Design that’s in harmony with all business values is an investment that will always pay dividends.

Transmission Creative

Transmission Creative

Formed by Grant Mitchell (formerly of The Chase, Graphic Partners and Creative Lynx) in 2007, Transmission was created with a simple manifesto. To listen, think, create and deliver.

Grant explains "I really wanted to create a clear illustration of where good design stems from and to cut out all the superfluous nonsense that seems to be attached to design these days. These four words provide an ethos upon which Transmission is built, whilst also equipping clients with a tangible process they can easily identify with.

I think it's really important that design has substance to it, that it's informed, that it resonates with the audience for which it is intended. Design which has meaning and purpose and which clients can see real benefits from investing in.

It's Transmission's genuine belief that creative thinking and intelligent design can have a tremendously positive influence on individuals, companies and organisations of all shapes and sizes.

And it's equally as significant that designer and client get direct interaction with each other, as it is from here that the most compelling results are achieved and the most potent relationships formed, consequently the aim is to retain a compact, friendly and approachable design studio which has all the experience and knowledge of a much larger outfit."

Secondnature

Secondnature cross the boundaries of art and design to create innovative and distinctive abstract sculpture.

Their unconventional approach combines a graphic designer’s eye for line and pattern with a fine artist’s feel for materials and texture.

The work is inspired by the wilder side of nature. Elements of chance and play are used to digitally create organic shapes which are then refined, developed and cut into edgy, dynamic, abstract sculptural forms.

In early 2007 after spending the last 14 years in the design industry (the last 8 of which in new media design and Flash development), I decided to jump into the big bad world of freelance.

It's been a great year working with people such as Love Creative, Magnetic North, Tak!, Tonic, Bloc and Poke as well as for ESPN directly in New York, on brands such as Orange, Subaru, Dr Martens, BBC and Sony.

That first year in freelance has just had a great ending too with winning the Best Freelancer category in this years Big Chip Awards as well as being featured in July's Web Design issue of Computer Arts Projects.

Here's to another great year.

West Cheshire College

West Cheshire College is a specialist vocational college. Our strategic plan states

"The College will further develop an integrated approach to its vocational work so that the engagement of employers is reflected in all that it does as a specialist vocational college".

This means that what, when, how and where we deliver learning reflects the needs of employers as well as individuals. It also means that as a College we actively welcome applicants from the industries and sectors we serve as well as those with an education background. We are one team recognising that support services are as important to our learners and our business as delivery teams.

We aim for learners to be employable and work ready and to support employers in achieving their business aims and improving their productivity. The College is one of only 26 in the country with the new standard which recognises its excellence in employer training and responsiveness and one of only three with the additional award for engineering. It has three Centres of Vocational Excellence in Health and Social Care, Automotive Manufacturing and Logistics. Innovation and initiative are encouraged. We aim to be the leader in the field of vocational learning.

The College has around 22,000 learners every year. These include:
* 14 -16 year olds who learn part time in the College
* 16 -18 year olds who are mainly full time in the College
* Apprentices who learn in the College and in the workplace
* Adults who are mainly part time and learn in the College
* Employees learning in their work place
* Adults learning in the community.

The College offers provision for the technological, creative and service industries. The only area it does not currently offer learning in is the land-based sector. The College offers learning routes from entry level to Higher Education. All full time and substantial part time learners are supported to achieve the English and Maths skills they will need to be employable.

We employ the equivalent of 440 full time permanent staff and a further 320 under hourly paid contracts. The College is one of the biggest employers in West Cheshire. There is a comprehensive development programme for all staff including individual support to achieve qualifications such as literacy, numeracy, certificates in education and ITQ. There are regular training and briefing events culminating each year in a week long staff conference. Staff are also encouraged and supported in keeping their skills and knowledge of industries up to date through visits, placements and shadowing schemes. There is an aspiring leaders’ course and a management development programme.

The College has a turnover of around £22 million a year. It is financially sound and has paid above the national recommendation for salary increases in the last three years. It has an innovative scheme to allow access to additional parts of the pay scale for many staff. The College has a contributory final salary pension scheme, preferential rates for BUPA health care, a child care voucher scheme and ‘golden hellos’ for teachers in shortage areas. The largest proportion of its income comes from the Learning and Skills Council for whom it delivers learning for younger learners, individual adults and employers. The College is the largest provider of Train to Gain (training for employers) in Cheshire and Warrington and is one of its largest providers of Apprenticeships. Non-publicly funded work is growing. The College also provides vocational Higher Education through it Associate College status with the University of Chester and delivers Personal Development and Community Learning for Cheshire County Council.

The College is embarking on an exciting and innovative capital project worth c£70 million which will produce two high quality campuses in Chester and Ellesmere Port based on real work environments and personalised and vicarious learning. For further information on this project and other aspects of our work please visit www.West-Cheshire.ac.uk

Best of Manchester

TURNING THE SPOTLIGHT ON MANCHESTER’S MOST CREATIVE MUSICIANS, FASHION DESIGNERS AND ARTISTS

The Best of Manchester is back. Organised by Urbis, led by Peter Saville and judged by a panel of industry experts, the Best of Manchester Awards spotlight the work of Manchester’s creative professionals. There is no age limit, no hype and no rules: just the best creative thinking by the best creative professionals working in Manchester today.

The annual awards celebrate innovation in three fields: art, music and fashion. Entry was via an open competition, with entrants encouraged to submit work that was genuinely new, exciting and innovative. Over 250 creative professionals entered – an increase of 65% on last year’s inaugural awards.

Some of the biggest names in art, music and fashion joined Peter Saville at Urbis to sift through the entries, including the broadcaster and critic, Miranda Sawyer; Luke Bainbridge (Observer Music Monthly); Caroline Elleray, Head of A&R at Universal Music Publishing; the Castlefield Gallery’s Kwong Lee; David Mallon, the fashion brains behind Ringspun and Elvis Jesus; and Tim Thomas of Manchester’s Blueprint Studios.

‘The competition is very simple,’ said Peter Saville. ‘It’s a showcase of ideas. Manchester is full of people coming up with great concepts but those people aren’t getting the opportunities they deserve. The Best of Manchester is a chance to uncover the ideas of a city known for its creative thinking.’

‘There are plenty of competitions out there for young people,’ confirmed Urbis Chief Executive, Vaughan Allen. ‘But there’s very little for those who’ve spent years grafting at the coalface of the creative industries. It’s easy to champion young people, and easier still to celebrate it when they make it big. But what about those left in the middle? The Best of Manchester is a chance for Manchester to recognise and support its creative professionals when they need it most – when they’re on the verge of making it to the next level of their career.’

The exhibition of shortlisted entrants’ work opens on 8 August (until 28 September), with the winners announced by Peter Saville at an awards ceremony on 7 August.

More information can be found at www.urbis.org.uk/bestofmanchester.

United City

United City is a new voice for business that believes Greater Manchester needs a total transport revolution if we are to remain competitive in the global marketplace. We know that massive investment and tens of thousands of new jobs will be lost if we do nothing.

We stand convinced that our City Region’s bid into the government’s Transport Innovation Fund, which will secure £3 billion of new, national investment in our infrastructure, is a once-only opportunity that we must support, together.

Taken together, the proposed £3 billion package of investment represents the biggest-ever public transport improvement scheme outside London. Vitally, we have been assured that the congestion charge will not be introduced until the bulk of these improvements have been made.

We have built our businesses in Greater Manchester. We are focused on a better future. We are united. We urge you to join us.
Let’s keep Manchester moving.

<www.unitedcity.co.uk>
