Media Apprenticeships

Northwest young people hoping to break into broadcasting are being encouraged to apply to the UK’s premier apprenticeship programme, which is launched today (May 12).

Some of the biggest names in TV have come together to offer thirty-six 16-22-year-olds a unique opportunity to break into the business, after the phenomenal success of the first Advanced Apprenticeship in Media Production - the only one of its kind anywhere in the UK.

Companies including the BBC, ITV Granada, Lime Pictures, Channel M and Sumners will again join forces alongside smaller companies such as Flix Facilities, Channel K and Mange2Media, to back the Advanced Apprenticeships, giving young people the chance to work behind the scenes of the broadcasting industry.

“When we launched the scheme last summer, it was the first time a production apprenticeship programme had been created specifically for the media industry, so we were unsure how it would be received,” explains David Longworth, Apprentices Training Manager for Northwest Vision and Media, which works on behalf of the region’s film, TV, radio and digital content industries.

“The response to the first Apprenticeships has been phenomenal, and the feedback we’ve received from everyone concerned has been so positive, that we’re delighted to be offering the scheme for a second year,” adds David.

The Advanced Apprenticeship in Media Production is open to 16-22-year-olds, living in the Northwest, and is designed specifically for people who wouldn’t usually get the chance to break into broadcasting.

Applicants DON’T need to have GCSE Maths or English, but should be able to work at that level. Anyone who already has a Level 3 qualification, or equivalent, is NOT eligible to apply. Graduates are also not eligible to apply.

“The scheme represents the growing belief in the media industry that talent isn’t about where you live or skin colour, educational achievements, gender or background,” says David, who together with the BBC, Skillset and the Learning and Skills Council, helped devise the apprenticeships, and continues to mentor the first Apprentices, who will complete their 18-month scheme in April 2009.

The second 18-month Programme will begin in September 2008 and will run until March 2010, with each apprentice receiving training and all the experience needed to kick-start their career in the industry. In addition, participants will be able to gain a Level 3 qualification while training.

Apprentices will work across a range of companies such as the BBC, ITV Granada, Sumners, Lime Pictures, 3Sixty Media, Channel M, Flix Facilities, Channel K, Mange2Media, October Films North, and Red Production Company.

“The apprenticeship will develop skills and abilities in various production roles, as well as allowing the trainees to learn about all areas of the media industry,” explains David. “Apprentices will also develop invaluable contacts and a wealth of practical experience across a range of different broadcasting companies.”

At the end of the scheme, it’s hoped the apprentices will be the next generation of industry talent. “There are no guarantees, but once the scheme ends the trainees will have acquired all the skills and experience they need to secure work in their chosen part of the media industry,” says David.

People aged between 16-19-years-old should contact their local Connexions centre before June 13 to apply for an Advanced Apprenticeship. For branch details contact Connexions on T: 0161 245 4945 or E: <employersupport@careers-solutions.co.uk>

People aged between 20-22-years-old should contact Northwest Vision and Media before June 13 to apply for an Advanced Apprenticeship. Send all enquiries / applications to <apprentices@visionandmedia.co.uk>

· Full details of how to apply and the criteria for entry onto the 2008/10 Advanced Apprenticeship in Media Production are available now on [www.visionandmedia.co.uk/page/media-apprenticeships-2008/10](www.visionandmedia.co.uk/page/media-apprenticeships-2008/10)

Tender Notice - Website Projects for Arts Council England

Tender: Arts Council England – Website Projects

The Arts Council is seeking to appoint a small roster of digital creative agencies to develop highly creative large and small website projects. The scope of work includes the redevelopment of the Arts Council's corporate website as well as small, innovative, fast-turnaround and larger longer term and more complex networking and interactive sites.

Corporate website development: The redevelopment will aim to transform the Arts Council's online presence by May 2009. It will be used to promote and showcase the arts, offering spaces for shared critical and creative activity, and encouraging a mass online audience to explore, sample and share. This exciting project would be a wonderful opportunity for a creative agency looking for an ambitious brief with lots of scope for innovative and creative thinking.

Campaign/project website development: The Arts Council also requires agencies to design and develop around 20 smaller project websites per year. Sites range from small, short-term and fairly simple information sites to larger, longer term and more complex networking and interactive sites and topics covered vary hugely from public-facing project sites to campaign sites targeted at a niche audience. All sites will demonstrate strong focus on design combined with flexible and scalable technology which embraces and tests new ways of interacting with audiences.

At present these project sites are build on appropriate CMS solutions as defined by the developing agency this may be consolidated to one centrally agreed CMS solution for all project/campaign site development. Development time for each project site ranges from three weeks to nine months depending on the scale of site required, and budget for each project ranges from GBP10,000 to GBP50,000.

The exact size of the roster will depend on the size and capabilities of preferred agencies and therefore the appropriateness for the Arts Council's projects. It is anticipated that this will be 3 agencies but, if beneficial to all, could increase to no more than 5 agencies.

System maintenance and support services. Computer and related services. Computer-related services. Computer support and consultancy services. System maintenance and support services. Software programming and consultancy services.
Leadership Development Through Action Learning

Arts About Manchester, on behalf of Manchester Arts Managers’ Forum, has been co-ordinating a series of Action Learning Sets for 24 existing and emerging leaders.

We are now inviting applications to join a second cohort from director-level, senior and middle managers from across the cultural sector and from other sectors.

There are still some places available for sets starting this June and we are planning further sets to start in September.

Action Learning allows individuals to
o	practise and receive feedback from peers on their leadership and management skills
o	to explore dilemmas and challenges whilst gaining insight into how others achieve different solutions
o	to build contacts across different organisations and sectors, all in a confidential environment with a trained facilitator.

Participants need to commit to six half-day sessions over a 6-9 month period. The cost to join a set will be £300 (excluding VAT). Applications need to be received by Friday 30 May 2008.

Comments from current participants:

“Action learning is probably one of the most useful professional development programmes I have been involved in. It focuses on enabling the participant to find real solutions to real problems and learn from real situations. Much more useful than listening to another case study or another theory un-tested in the real world”
Director, Arts Venue

“Action Learning is a great way of identifying, discussing and solving issues and problems you face at work. It helps you think about issues in different ways and from different points of view!.
Marketing Manager, Museum

What is Action Learning?
An Action Learning Set is a group of six to eight people working at comparable levels of responsibility who meet regularly for a contracted number of meetings. In this instance the Set will meet six times initially working with an external facilitator. At the end of the contract, the group members decide whether or not to continue meeting for a further period, and whether to work on their own or with a facilitator. All discussions are confidential.

This approach to Action Learning Sets has been developed by Action Learning Associates – see appendix for further information on what happens in a set and how it can support an individual’s leadership development needs. All facilitators for the second cohort have been part of an Action Learning Set previously and have been trained by ALA.

Who is it for?
Action Learning Sets will be grouped into ‘existing’ and ‘emerging’ leaders. Existing leaders in the first cohort have been director or Chief Executive level from different scale organisations. Emerging leaders have included heads of marketing, education directors, curators, producers and fund-raising managers.

What is my commitment?
You will need to commit to attend six sessions – an initial all day meeting then half-days (morning or afternoon) which will take place in city centre Manchester. The programme will start with an all day meeting in May and following this meeting dates will be agreed in advance by all members of each set. The cost for each each person joining an Action Learning set will be £300 per person (ex VAT).

How Do I Apply?
Please send a short letter of application (100-200 words) stating why you are interested in joining an Action Learning Set and what you think you will gain from it together with an up-to-date CV to:

Ivan Wadeson
Chief Executive
Arts About Manchester
Green Fish Resource Centre
46 – 50 Oldham Street
Manchester M4 1LE

Or by email to <ivan@aam.org.uk>

The deadline for returning applications is Friday 30 May.
Northwest Legacy Programme – ‘We Play’ - call for expressions of interest

'We Play’ is a new programme initiative led by Culture Northwest for the Legacy Trust UK to create a lasting legacy from the London2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in the Northwest.

Culture Northwest, on behalf of the Legacy Trust UK, is offering up to £2.1 million in total for up to three major projects. These projects must be led and delivered by partnerships and run for a period of up to five years. Projects need to have started by December 2009.

At this stage in the process, what we are looking for are “ideas like never before” (London2012) and “robust methodologies” for working in collaboration and partnership over the duration of the programme’s time span.

Culture Northwest is seeking to invest in proposals which can “deliver sustainable step-change in the region’s creative and cultural sectors that will resonate beyond 2012, creating both a legacy of quality, participation and creativity and a stronger model of operation in the region”: Be Inspired Northwest Legacy Framework for the 2012 Games.

The emphasis is on new activity. Proposals may however, also be submitted for the development of existing capacity for successful project delivery on a larger scale with new partners or in a new geographical location.

The Trust will channel its funds through Culture Northwest to Legacy Partners who take a strategic approach in order to ensure the efficient and effective distribution of its funds and to reach out to communities across the Northwest. These partners will be not-for-profit organisations with established community networks, which are well placed to identify the needs, aspirations and untapped talents in their constituencies. The ultimate beneficiaries of the Trust’s grants to the Northwest will be people across the region.

To obtain the Northwest Legacy Programme Briefing and Expressions of Interest Form please visit [www.culturenorthwest.co.uk](http://www.culturenorthwest.co.uk) or contact <debbi.lander@northwestcultureobservatory.co.uk>

MA Cultural Leadership

MA Cultural Leadership
Liverpool John Moores University
Faculty of Media, Arts and Social Science

Passionate about creativity and art? Visionary and self aware?
Are you looking to develop your leadership skills within the creative industries or cultural sector?

Are you currently managing within the sector and seeking to progress your career?
The programme is founded on a conviction that leadership is dynamic; it operates at all levels of an organization and is not the sole preserve of the CEO. This collective and collaborative leadership requires individuals with confidence, passion and strong self awareness, a vision for the future and the ability to communicate and motivate others to help make this vision a reality.

More specific to the cultural sector than an MBA, the MA Cultural Leadership has been developed to provide Masters level training that focuses on the leadership needs of 21st century creative and cultural organizations and it does this in collaboration with employers within the sector, generating debate, critical awareness and a growing and shared knowledge base. Since arts managers are often self taught and find it hard to make time for their own professional development, this programme has been designed to provide opportunities for personal and professional development without necessarily taking students away from their workplace.

The programme is flexible and innovative. More leadership-focused than an arts management programme, it offers a range of pathways for the emerging leader wishing to develop knowledge, skills and confidence.

Liverpool is a city rich in the arts and as European Capital of Culture 2008, the city is in the midst of a spectacular year and a legacy that will endure. Already, 2008 is the rocket fuel that is propelling Liverpool's economy, and solid foundations have now been laid for its ongoing transformation into a world-class city. It is within this rich context that we have developed the MA Cultural Leadership programme and it is in collaboration with the sector that we will deliver it.

Practitioner engagement and relationships with cultural organisations inform both the development and delivery of modules, providing core elements such as research project opportunities, teaching input and case study development.

Guest Tutors in 2007/08 have included:

- John Holden, Demos
- Graham Leicester, International Futures Forum
- Sue Harrison, Consultant
- Deb Barnard, Creative Leadership Consultant
- Jo Hargreaves, Morris Hargreaves McIntyre
- Dr Beatriz Garcia, Director Impacts 08
- Cara McMahon, Senior Consultant, ABL Consulting
- Iona Horsburgh, Segue Consultancy Ltd
- Nick Owen, Director, Aspire Trust
- Mick Elliott, Chief Executive, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic
- Eddie Berg, Director, BFI SouthBank

Research Projects currently being delivered by students include:

- Tate Liverpool: Market Research for Late at Tate: Brand awareness amongst Volunteer Workforce
- IMPACTS08: Mapping the Sector
- Liverpool Arts and Regeneration Consortium: Mapping arts organisations engagement within North Liverpool Area; Research into shared services amongst cultural organisations

The course is led by Susanne Burns. An experienced senior arts leader with 25 years of experience within the sector, Susanne combines her work at LJMU with her ongoing consultancy business. Her current work includes the evaluation of British Dance Edition 2008, the evaluation of Youth Dance England’s two year development programme, Next Steps and the development of the Creative Apprenticeship programme in Liverpool for LARC. Prior to her freelance career she worked for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and FACT as Director of Development. She is currently training as a coach.

To make an application or for further information about the course and the fees please contact:

Trish Wardle
Admissions Officer
Liverpool School of Art & Design
<P.Wardle@LJMU.ac.uk>
Tel: 0151 231 5084

Or contact Susanne Burns, Course Leader: <s.burns@ljmu.ac.uk>

Visit our website for more information: [www.ljmu.ac.uk](http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/StudyLJMU/Courses/86515.htm)

Not Part OF 08 - call for entries

Summer 2009 will see the largest, most wide ranging and inclusive arts festival Manchester has yet seen; The Not Part Of Festival.

From established and fringe venues, artists of every discipline will grab the chance to use this new platform to demonstrate their underground, exciting, fresh, modern work. The festival is a collaborative movement born out of the opportunity that the Manchester International Festival has created for the benefit of both the people and city of Manchester.

To build towards this (and on the successes of last summer’s Not Part Of Manchester International Festival [www.notmanchesterinternationalfestival.co.uk](http://www.notmanchsterinternationalfestival.co.uk) and January’s Not Part Of New Years Eve [www.myspace.com/notpartofnye](http://www.myspace.com/notpartofnye) we are pleased to announce this years Not Part Of Festival (3rd till 12th July 2008).

‘Not Part Of is a celebration of Manchester; of how much creativity there is here everyday and of how welcoming we are as a city and a people. By ensuring that the Not Part Of Festival is open and inclusive and dedicated to removing barriers for artists we are ensuring that this festival is true to Manchester’s ideals.’
Gareth McCann, Director, Not Part Of Festival.

We have already proven that there is the appetite and creative pool to sustain it within the artistic community of Manchester. And right now; due in part to the recent successes of MIF, Not Part Of MIF, the Re:Play festival, Studio Salford, etc; combined with the excitement of the opening of mediacity:uk and the BBC’s move to Salford; is exactly the right time to launch it into the public consciousness in order for it to be a part of Manchester’s future for many years to come.

We are looking for artists, creators, venues, acts, promoters, etc who want to be involved with a festival that will not profit from them but provide a platform for them to promote themselves and all the other artists involved. We place no artistic constraints on creators other than they take the Not Part Of Oath to support all the other artists that have done the same.

‘If you already have an event on in and around Manchester city centre between 3rd & 12th July then we would be delighted to hear from you. If you’ve an idea for an event then we’ll give you all the help and advice we can. Instead of being one event in isolation, be part of something bigger and stronger; be Not Part Of.’
Beth McCann, Director, Not Part Of

We already have some very exciting events in the pipeline for this summer which will be announced shortly.

The deadline for people to be Not Part Of is 1st June 2008. If you are interested in being involved in anyway please email <gareth@notpartof.org> or call 07856 977 329.
exposures - call for entries

exposures – the UK's leading competitive festival for student film and moving image – is looking for the talent of the future. Call for entries is now open for the 2008 edition to be held in November at Cornerhouse and Urbis, Manchester's two leading contemporary arts venues, co-hosts of exposures for the first time this year.

The 2008 exposures festival is, like its predecessors, looking to find new and exciting filmmaking talent amongst today's students. However, this year's competition widens the criteria for entries to include not only film but all aspects of the moving image ie video, mobile 'phone work, animation or visual art installations. The competition is open to students who have created their work whilst studying on any UK course between August 2007 and July 2008. Work does not have to have been made as part of the course. Pieces should be under 30 minutes long.

Selected work will get the opportunity to be a part of the exciting public festival in November, with those who are successful in the competitive strands having the chance to win film equipment and distribution deals. Work to be considered by the judging panel can fall within any genre: drama, documentary, experimental, music video, comedy, whatever works best. This year's exposures theme is change.

In addition to the five-day public showcase, the exposures festival experience also offers the chance to debate with guest speakers, participate in practical workshops and take advantage of networking opportunities.

exposures also responds to the growing number of younger filmmakers with the underexposed strand which showcases pieces from under-19s. Selected work forms part of the exposures festival. Details and entry forms can be found on the exposures website at www.exposuresfestival.co.uk.

Last year's exposures received over 600 entries from more than 100 education institutions around the country. Now in its 15th year it has grown to become a hugely important five-day festival. Unconstrained by commercial considerations, output from students is at its most raw and interesting; creativity and imagination is paramount, and the quality consistently impressive.

To download an entry form and enter for free, go to [www.exposuresfestival.co.uk](http://www.exposuresfestival.co.uk)

For further press information, please contact Mandy Martinez on 020 7428 6130/
07970 713966 or email <mandy@mandymartinez.co.uk>

Festival dates 23-27 November, 2008

To download an entry form and enter for free, go to [www.exposuresfestival.co.uk](http://www.exposuresfestival.co.uk)

To obtain the Northwest Legacy Programme Briefing and Expressions of Interest Form please visit www.culturenorthwest.co.uk or contact debbi.lander@northwestcultureobservatory.co.uk
