“Off Your facebook"

How babycakes stumbled upon sales strategy through social networking.

A one day seminar with Dave Smith, Babycakes Wholesale and Export Manager, and Dean Taylor, Artist and Label Manager, looking at the use of Social Networking and Online Media as a business tool for companies and organisations.??

Here we are, smack in the middle of the information age discovering that our greatest advantages aren’t coming from what we know but from whom we know. Today's high achievers are not so much a product of superior expertise as they are a product of superior networking.

The growth of communication via the internet in the new millennium has changed the way that we do business forever. The race is on to see which businesses can take advantage of the opportunities this brings.

Drunk on an orgy of accounts, the list is endless, but how do we use them in a coherent and strategic way to market or promote our organisations?

With a focus on the creative industries, the aim of the day is to use real examples to understand the implications of the technology as well as give all involved the opportunity to discuss the ways in which they may use it for themselves, their businesses and organisations.

What are the current and future trends and how do we go about joining the dots to make real our digital networks for commerce and advantage.
who the seminar is for:
All who want to learn about networking and online media or want to use it in a more systematic, strategic and beneficial way including:
•	Individuals
•	Small to Medium Creative Enterprises
•	Third Sector Organisations

what the seminar covers:
•	A real life case study and success story of Babycakes and their use of social media marketing to communities, not just consumers

•	How to use Social Networking websites and Online Media to help promote your product, company or organisation. Q&A about the talks, about how it affects those taking part and what the future trends and technologies might be

•	The opportunity to network yourselves in the "non-virtual” with other similar individuals and organisations
Reading for reading’ sake

Event dates: Thur Apr. 8th – Sun Apr. 11th 2010

Opening event: Thur Apr 8th – 6 - 9pm

This Easter Islington Mill will be rejoicing in words as it hosts, Reading for reading sake, a 4 day event aimed at exploring reading as a practice. Unlike a regular reading group, ‘Reading for readings sake’ aims to unfold the activity of reading, the situations in which we read, reading as a shared event, a private passion, concentration, interpretation, sound and voice, the symbolic and emotional value of the act.

The project was initiated last year by Maurice Carlin, Megan Wakefield and Helen Kaplinsky, motivated by a shared fascination with reading as an activity. The first event took place at Bristol’s Spike Island during January 2010.

For the next installment of the project at Islington Mill, those taking part will be invited to spend their days reading, where, when, how and whatever they like. Methods and approaches to reading employed previously by readers at the inaugural Bristol event will be described at the opening on Thur Apr 8th. To offer some direction to visitors that are unfamiliar with the area, we will ask residents of the the cities of Salford and Manchester for suggestions of favourite or out of the ordinary reading locations.

Evenings will be spent at Islington Mill, where food will be served and the days-worth of reading and reading-related experience shared in small groups over dinner, while dinner-time lectors read aloud to the assembled company. Selected gigs and performances will be taking place in Islington Mill’s clubspace on a number of the later evenings.

Sat 11th will feature a day packed with workshops, events and performances in the gallery space and throughout Islington Mill. Full details of these to follow soon.

NB. There is a limited number of places for the daytime and early evening events. Please get in touch if you’d like to take part and we’ll reserve you a place.

Email: [deaddigital@islingtonmill.com](mailto:deaddigital@islingtonmill.com)

Graphicacy can be defined as a type of communication, in which written words or mathematical notation are insufficient on their own.

We are going to explore and evaluate how we intergrate Graphicacy into our design process. The research will take 1 Month to complete and our findings will be posted online.

Two-person show: Leo Fitzmaurice & Kim Rugg

Castlefield Gallery is pleased to present a two-person exhibition with Leo Fitzmaurice and Kim Rugg consisting of both new and existing work. Through the dissecting and re-arranging of mass produced information based material, such as newspapers, brochures, comics and packaging, the artists fragment our visual and cognitive understanding of images and text, and force us to reconsider the familiar from a completely new perspective.

Fitzmaurice’s interest is in the material substance of communication rather its content; his work comments on a world of ever increasing commercial information through a sense of dysfunctionality within our environment reordering his publicity material to construct aesthetic revelations. Rugg, on the other hand, is more selective of content; sourcing newspaper front pages that feature significant world events, meticulously cutting out each letter, rearranging them in alphabetical order; or cutting postage stamps into tiny shards, rearranging them on the envelope and sending them through the postal system unperturbed, her work is delicately subversive.

Reducing the objects to their material substance, the artists obliterate their discernable function, undermining or sabotaging the original message. Through the use of mundane materials, their work can be seen to reconcile both the dexterity of labour intensive craft with that of cultural, social and political undertones imbuing a sense of playful dissent.

Preview: Friday 19 February 2010, 6-8pm. Everyone welcome! Refreshments will be provided
