Students at the University of Salford have started 2013 on a high with a live project at the innovative new technology workspace in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, Tech Hub.

BA (Hons) Graphic Design students were commissioned to create a number of large murals to populate the walls at Tech Hub’s Manchester base. Taking inspirations from Manchester’s rich history in the fields of computer science and creative arts, students have produced unique illustrations and typography to bring the space to life.

TechHub are an international community who provide workspaces for tech entrepreneurs to meet, work, learn and collaborate. They provide physical and virtual spaces that enable technology start-ups to work smarter, develop faster and increase their chances of success by connecting with like-minded individuals and specialists from around the world.

Natasha Willcocks, Graphic Design lecturer commented: ‘This was a fantastic project for our students because the work they produced will be seen by other graphic designers and technology professionals, giving the students the opportunity to showcase their work and get noticed by people who are in the same industry.’

Students worked for a total of around 40hours at the Manchester space to produce a collection of interlinking and subject specific designs and illustrations which will be showcased to hundreds of creative professionals across the globe as the TechHub community begins to grow in Manchester.

Dough Ward of Tech Hub comments on the collaboration: ’The Graphic Design course at the University of Salford comes highly recommended within the industry as being very creative and dynamic; it was noticeable how high the student’s standard of work is. Students quickly understood the TechHub brand and ethos but, most importantly, they understood and agreed how essential location and history are to TechHub Manchester, which has subsequently come out through their visual work.

We wanted to give the students an opportunity to put their mark on an up and coming centre of innovation, with the aim of them gaining opportunities for commercial work after the project has finished.

The murals will be launched officially next week on Thursday 31st January 6-9pm at the space, to sign up for the event please visit the TechHub website.
