London Calling 'The World'

A recent exhibition at Idea Generation Gallery in London saw Salford artist Ric Gibbs exhibiting alongside Tracey Emin, Nick Hornby, Billy Childish and others paying tribute to Ray Lowry, Salford artist responsible for the iconic Clash ‘London Calling’ album cover.
Salford artist and designer Ric Gibbs recently exhibited three pieces of work in an exhibition celebrating the work of ‘The Clash’ war artist Ray Lowry at Idea Generation Gallery in London. The exhibition featured work from 30 artists asked to reinterpret Ray’s iconic album cover for The Clash’s ‘London Calling’.
Manchester born, Lowry began his career drawing for Punch Magazine, International Times, OZ, NME and Private Eye creating a cult following for his celebrated illustrations and cartoons. Most famously he created the unforgettable artwork for the Clash’s seminal 1979 album London Calling. Followed by many devoted fans, Lowry and his work has been cited as an influence by a broad spectrum of artists from John Squire to Arthur Smith, Keith to Paul Simenon and Tracey Emin.
Underlying Ray Lowry’s cult status and influences, 30 prominent artists produced new art work interpreting his famous 1979 album cover for The Clash. Celebrating Ray’s work and career the artists have looked at how Ray influenced their art as well as the personal influence he had on their artistic output.
To say that Ric is completely ‘made up’ to have been asked to submit his work and be accepted is an understatement.
The exhibition moves on to New York and Tokyo.
Other work by Ric Gibbs can be seen at his ‘unofficial’ gallery at the fantastic Kings Arms, Bloom Street, Salford.
