New exhibition reveals artistic approach to map making

Arts and Heritage group, Manchester Modernist Society is hosting a free exhibition of maps developed by 12 regional artists and designers.

Inspired by the organisation’s own collection of 20th Century maps, the exhibition is part of the Chapel Street Open Studios series of events which showcases the best grass roots creative output of the Chapel Street area.

The exhibition includes a variety of work including a map of Manchester in the form of an angiogram (an x-ray of blood vessels); a track of every aeroplane to take off from Heathrow airport in 24hours; a map designed to promote Salford’s ‘Unconvention’ music festival and an intriguing take on motorway signage.

Jack Hale at Manchester Modernist Society said: “Maps hold a fascination for lots of people as they attempt to bring order to the chaos of the real world. The pieces we’ve collated in this exhibition have never been seen together previously and represent an artistic interpretation of what a map can be.

“They are beautiful and engaging pieces and take viewers on a journey of imagination.”

All pieces are for sale and proceeds will be used to further the activities of the Manchester Modernist Society.

Manchester’s modernist society is an artist-led organisation that documents, investigates and celebrates the twentieth century city in the spirit of the amateur and the enthusiast. It believes that the recent past and its rich variety of grand and ordinary; cherished and neglected buildings continue to play a part in our shared consciousness and sense of identity.
