The David Chipperfield-designed Hepworth Wakefield wins its third major award since opening to great acclaim in May 2011.

The Hepworth Wakefield has won its third major award in just eight months since it opened in May 2011. The gallery has now won the Judges’ Award for Best Public Building at the Wallpaper* Design Awards 2012.

Now in their eighth year, the Wallpaper* Design Awards recognise the very best in international design, fashion and lifestyle. An international panel of judges which included Turner Prize-winning artist Grayson Perry; New York-based Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly; Swiss art auctioneer and co-founder of Phillips de Pury, Simon de Pury; head of Bulthaup, the renowned German kitchen manufacturer, Gerd Bulthaup; and photographer/art director/illustrator Jean-Paul Goude, selected winners for the 11 Judges’ Awards, with the remaining award winners chosen by the magazine’s editors and international contributors.

Cllr Peter Box, Leader of Wakefield Council said: “David Chipperfield’s design for The Hepworth Wakefield has surpassed all our expectations. Along with his team, David has truly delivered a landmark building and gallery of international significance. It’s wonderful to see his skill and vision being acknowledged with awards such as this.”

Simon Wallis, Director of The Hepworth Wakefield said: “This is a wonderful start to the New Year and further prestigious recognition of the world-class gallery David Chipperfield has designed for Wakefield. We have attracted over 360,000 visitors since opening in late May 2011 and we are now one of the most visited galleries in the UK."

The gallery has recently been shortlisted for the Design Museum Awards 2012 for Architecture and the Civic Trust Awards 2012. Winners will be announced in April and March respectively.
