German fashion label publishes designs for free under Creative Commons

Berlin-based fashion label Pamoyo has become one of the first major fashion houses to publish it’s designs for free under the Creative Commons system. Under the BY-NC-SA license users are able to access the full designs and recreate them for non-commercial purposes as long as the originator is fully acknowledged.

Alterations and additions can be made to the design and then have the potential to be sold through the company. Chief Designer, Cecilia Palmer, told the BBC website that “I would really love it if one of our designs gets worked into something completely new and comes back to be part of our collection”.

The idea is for more designers to become involved in the creative process, as is often found in the digital sectors with open source software, and to thereby reduce research&development costs as well as to better harness the wide ranging, and often divergent views held by a larger cross-section of designers. Palmer points out that “part of our philosophy is not to be a one-man band, but to involve the creativity of other designers into the label”.
