Manchester based architects/designers Dwelle have been selected to modernise three multi-storey tower blocks for Eastlands Homes, a Manchester housing association.

The first Public Consultations took place this week, presenting the initial design ideas and proposed materials to the residents and local community.

Dwelle were appointed following an invitation to submit outline design proposals, with six other architectural practices, for a £7 million project to over-clad and roof two blocks (Platt and Worsley Courts) in Rusholme and Bickerdike Court in Longsight. The project will also include new entrances, the internal communal areas and external landscaping. This is the first of two phases to improve the RSL’s housing stock.

Ric Frankland (Director of Dwelle) said:

“We are delighted to have won this project, and are really excited by the prospect of making positive improvements to the appearance and functionality of these buildings.

“Although our recent focus has been on the design and manufacture of micro-buildings, this project is certainly on a different scale! However, the approach is no different. We are still designing living environments that aim to be of the highest quality, and as sustainable and healthy as we can possibly achieve.

“One of the most important aspects of our work will be listening and responding to the residents. Understanding their needs and the aspirations of the stakeholders will be the key to the projects success.”

Dwelle have partnered with Halliday Meecham Architects for additional technical support, and will work with Creative Planning (directed by Claudia Gilbert) to provide public consultation and planning services.

Other members of the team include Joule Consulting Engineers and BCM (Sustainable Building Services Design Consultants).
