Competition for Local Artists - Beliz Kitchen Window - £500 to win

Posted by: Patrick Ward, Creative Times on December 01, 2008 00:00

Beliz Kitchen is a new family run café in Levenshulme serving freshly made sandwiches, home-cooked food and cakes to local residents and workers.

They are looking for a local artist to create a unique piece of community art on the outside of their wall that looks onto the Kingsway roundabout.

This major thoroughfare in Manchester, joining Levenshulme, Burnage, Longsight and Fallowfield is a daily drudge for commuters that they feel could do with brightening up.

A plain white brick wall is on the side of the building, and they want to use this to create a window into Beliz Kitchen. This will be a piece of art that communicates to the local community and commuters the inner life and qualities of the café.

Submissions are invited from artists to create a window that looks into the café and Beliz Kitchen will be offering £500 (£300 prize and £200 materials budget) for the winning submission to complete the work and create a unique piece of community art.

Now that Manchester will lose the “b of the bang” it is only fitting that we create another masterpiece that won’t poke in the eye but will instead catch the eye of passers-by.

Specification for submissions is to see your ideas for the design, how this piece of art will be created, and in what timescale.

If you wish to submit your ideas then please contact Beliz Kitchen via email for an application form. Deadline for applications is 15th January 2008 and the winner will be announced on the 1st February 2008.
