Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA) at Lancaster University is currently seeking art or design-led proposals for a prestigious £10,000 award to create an artwork for the new LICA eco-building on campus.

The LICA building is being constructed to the BREEAM ‘outstanding’ standard, and will be the first Higher Education building in the UK to reach such strict environmental targets for construction. LICA combines the academic groups of Art, Design, Film, Music and Theatre Studies, as well as the three public arts: Peter Scott Gallery, Nuffield Theatre and Lancaster International Concerts. It also hosts the research group ImaginationLancaster.

The timber-framed building, set alongside woodland at the north end of campus, will be the public face of LICA, with a stage for the nationally and internationally recognised work produced at Lancaster University. The 5,000 square metre environmentally friendly timber building will be wrapped in translucent cladding which will filter varying degrees of light into the interior. The main accommodation includes three interlinked performance spaces, art and design studios and open-plan offices. The facility will be launched publicly in Spring 2011.

To mark this exciting development, LICA are seeking art or design-led proposals for a £10,000 award to create an artwork for the approach to the building. The work should respond sensitively to the location and environment around the building, which includes a small wooded area, and could potentially utilise the body of water in front of the building, over which visitors enter the foyer. Shortlisted proposals will form an opening exhibition in the building itself, and a final work will be selected for commission.
