With the move of major broadcasters (BBC and ITV) to MediaCity and the wealth of independent production companies in the region, the North provides numerous opportunities for emerging filmmaking and content production talent. But what does it take to get your foot in the door and build a career in the media and broadcast industries?

Find out from experience producers and programme makers how they got ahead in the media, what they are looking for in new emerging talent and what it takes to get a job in the media in the current economic climate.

The panel will be on hand to give advice and talk about working in the production today and the impact of the move North of much of the BBC for people wanting to work in the industry

- Paul Sapin: Paul is an exceptionally talented independent film-maker and producer who has worked consistently for BBC, C4 and ITV over the last twenty years. He has been able to survive in the tough market place and understands the freelance world of the media industry and how to find his way through the commissioning processes to often produce the films he wants to make.

- Mike Lewis, Executive Producer, BBC (the One Show). Having worked at ITV (as Editor of Tonight with Trevor MacDonald) for many years and then becoming freelanace before heading to the BBC, Mike has both a broad and in-depth knowledge of the industry and knows exactly what it takes to work within it and the expectations on young people entering it.

- “Anthea Nelson”http://www.antheanelson.com/: Production Designer Anthea began her career as a sculptor, propmaker & set decorator for opera, theatre and television. Her experience encompasses large and small productions / set builds and location work, working on feature, shorts, commercials and music video with directors such as Shane Meadows and Chris Morris to name but a few.

- Clare Judge: after completing her MA in Documentary Production at the University of Salford in 2009, Clare started her career as a researcher at Nine Lives Media and is currently working on documentaries.

- Fran Baker has spent 15 years self shooting and directing crews across the UK and world. To keep life interesting and avoid ever making the same programme twice, Fran has Produced and Directed a wide variety of documentaries from intimate observational documentaries to presenter led journeys, and traditional current affairs to drama docs. She has dealt with a host of Editorial Policy and Legal issues across this range of programming, including taking a local authority to the family court in order to make a programme. She has primetime credits on BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three, ITV 1 & Channel 5. The first 11 years of her career were spent in-house at the BBC; since 2007 she has been freelance.
