Portraits range from the highest art forms of oil painting and sculpture to the humblest of snapshot or caricature. They have been used for diverse purposes – to assert power, as a part of courting rituals, and commercially – as well as to remind us of the faces of those we care about. In the day run by Dr Victoria Whitfield participants will explore: – How to define a portrait – The changing form and function of portraits over time – How portraits manifest and rework identity – The working of the portrait studio during the 18th century, the genre’s “golden age” Friday 19th June 2009 from 10.00am – 4.00pm Fee £45 Course No: AD190S08 Pre-booking essential.
