Theatrical conjuring is one of the oldest forms of interaction design with its secret techniques for communication, deception, psychological control, and the manipulation of story. By considering the principles behind the creation of a mystery and the techniques of illusion design we can illuminate the design of interaction in media, games, software, and technology.

In this hands-on session you will learn some of the core principles of theatrical conjuring and explore how they have been applied to interaction design.

Stuart Nolan has worked in emerging media platforms for 17 years, producing for Web, mobile devices, games, and museum displays and designing some of the first Interactive TV applications in Europe. He has twice been a judge for the BAFTA Interactive Awards.

As a NESTA Fellow he began researching the role of the mysterious in interaction design and has studied magic with Paul Daniels, Banachek, and with Eugene Burger and Jeff McBride of the Las Vegas Mystery School.

He has developed Magic, Design and Technology projects for the Central School of Speech and Drama, Helsinki University of Technology, Northwest Vision&Media, The Royal College of Art, The University of Huddersfield, and MediaLab Madrid.
