Altered States
October 2010 – 8 January 2011

When the worlds of science and art collide the result is Altered States – an exhibition of the body and mind.

From Dolly the Sheep to Damien Hirst’s ‘Shark in a Tank’ – some incredible leaps have been made within science and culture over the past 200 years and Waterside Arts Centre sees the culmination of these two worlds in the unique exhibition ‘Altered States’.

The Altered States exhibition features some very personal pieces, which have arisen from the artists own medical diagnosis, to works inspired by close research with doctors, neurologists and radiologists in hospitals.

Altered States seeks to uncover the ways in which contemporary artists have been inspired by historical, current and future developments in bio-medical research and the impact science has had and is having on cultural and human endeavour.

Featuring a range of artistic practice including installation and wall-based work; artists have explored the importance of cultural references such as Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ to current concerns regarding genetics, medicine, reproduction, anatomy, mortality and longevity.

Artists include Susan Aldworth, Andrew Carnie, Tracy Nicholls, Angela Palmer and Daksha Patel.
There will be a series of related events and talks taking place during November and December.
