WORKSHOP: Contemporary Grooves for Bateria
Contemporary Groovesfor Bateria Drum & Bass Funky Plus Fours Sat 15 & Sun 16 November
The drum and dance workshop will draw upon movements and phrasing from the Afro Cuban / Brazilian traditions of the Orixás as well as contemporary influences to show how knowledge of afro-centric roots styles can inspire and help develop new original work. Tutors Percussion – Simon Preston Dance – Sallie MacLennan
Level of study Percussionists – Must have some playing experience (not complete beginners). Intermediate - advanced players welcome. Dancers – some dance experience required (not complete beginners). Intermediate - advanced dancers welcome.
Participants will learn how to build a performance based on two different contemporary rhythms with dance and an introductory song.
The Drum & Bass material is very excitingto play; this groove is fast and furious and uses dynamics tocreate tension and excitement. Special attention will be paidto useful technique and polyrhythms to give you the tools toplay and perform Drum & Bass.
The Funky Plus Fours groove explores the use of space and has interesting improvisational elements, particularly for the Surdo section. Dance work will combine movements and phrasing from Brazilian Candomblé with a modern, funky street style.
