Hello and welcome to the second Global Grooves news letter.


It is with great pleasure that we announce the first series of workshops and activities for our 2009/ 2010 schedule. To kick off the next phase of Global Grooves we have invited Vera Oliveira, one of the most inspirational and knowledgeable choreographers and performers we have had the pleasure to work with. Vera will be flying in from São Paulo, Brazil in mid February to help advise and deliver our first course. Very exciting!!


Vera Oliveira – São Paulo, Brazil. Vera has a wealth of experience in modern, contemporary and traditional Brazilian dance and choreography. She is the principal choreographer of the world famous youth performing arts group MENINOS DO MORUMBI and founder of ERÊS DE ÉBANO. Vera has studied dance internationally including styles from Senegal, India, Switzerland, Bali, Belgium, America and Argentina to name a few.


Vera has dedicated her life to the research and development of dance, keeping these cultures and traditions alive by passing this knowledge on to her students.

Candomblé Percussion and Songs. Feb -Apr 09


Following the success of the last short course, we are pleased to announce our second course in Candomblé percussion and songs.


By the end of this series of evening workshops you will gain a deeper understanding of Candomblé, develop the technique, phrasing and confidence to use this style in your future performance and practice. Particular attention will be paid to ensemble work and you will have opportunity to apply solo phrasing and arrangements in a collaborative workshop with the dance class at the end of the course. Candomblé Dances of the Orixás. Feb – Apr 09


In this course we will study the historical, geographical and social elements of Candomblé and other Afro-Brazilian Orixá dance traditions. We will look closely at the principal characteristics of each Orixá and the meanings and traditions behind each movement focusing on Oxossi, Omolú and Nana. By the end of this course participants will have the knowledge and experience to use Orixá dance in their normal practice and performance. Dancers will have the opportunity to work with live percussionists to understand the relationship between percussive phrasing and movement. Some dance experience is necessary for this course. A short course in Pan-Brazilian dance styles. Mar – April 09


In this course we will study the essence of Brazilian dance taking a close look at many different traditional and more modern styles of dance from Brazil. This course will give an in-depth overview of Brazilian dance drawing upon elements of the following traditions: Samba, Samba Rock, Samba de Roda, Samba Rasgado, Zouk, Forrozouk, Brazilian Salsa, Puxada de rede, Maracatu, Maracatu Rural, Afoxés, Catira, Frevo, Baião, Coco, Caboclinhos, Xaxado, Xoti, Forró, Ciranda, Afro-Dance, Indian Dance, Chegança, Pachata, Bolero, Merengue and Dança Sagradas. An introduction to Afro-Cuban Rhythms and Percussion Techniques. May -June 09


During this short course we will study rhythms and technique for Afro-Cuban percussion styles. Participants will have the opportunity to work with a variety of different instruments and styles and learn several arrangements that will be brought together in a combined dance and percussion session at the end of the course. We will concentrate on developing hand techniques for tumbadoras (congas) as well as learning the associated percussion parts for each rhythm. Introduction to Afro-Cuban dances of the Orishas. May – June 09


This 8 week course will be run by Cuban dancer Zaida Arencibia and will cover Yoruba dances for Eleggua, Ochun (Iyessa), Obatala, Chango and Ogun. Palo and Macuta (from the Congo Tradition), plus carnaval dances for Conga Oriental and Mozambique. The Yoruba dances for Chango and Ogun will be taught by Cuban dancer Juan Muñoz in a special evening taster session. During the course dancers will work on Cuban technique and physical conditioning as well as learning the choreography for the specific dances. Some dance experience is necessary for this course. Afoxé Manchester. July -Aug 09


In this course we will study the Brazilian (Nação Efon) music, dance and parade tradition of Afoxé. Drawing upon songs, choreography and phrasing from Candomblé we will work towards a full parade performance from the workshop group at the end of the course focusing on three ? four Orixás. Percussionists will use Agogo, Xequeré and Atabaque. Participation in the Candomblé short course will be an advantage as singing and playing will be a key area of development (see above). For dancers, previous dance experience will be necessary and participation in the Candomblé dance course will be an advantage (see above). Beginners to advanced participants welcome. West African Funk Grooves Aug – Sep 09


Drawing upon rhythms and phrasing from traditional and contemporary West African percussion ensembles, this course is designed to give a more modern outlook on West African percussion styles. Participants will be guided through an exploration of a modern ?funky? percussive grooves, focusing on one arrangement with solo phrasing, technique work and complementary parts.
